These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of SubContext ("we", "our", or "us"), available at https://www.subcontext.xyz, including our website, community translation cache, and browser extension. SubContext is an independent project run by a solo developer. Please read these Terms carefully.
By using SubContext, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service. If you use SubContext on behalf of someone else, you confirm you are authorized to accept these Terms for them.
SubContext is an AI, context-aware subtitle translator. It produces subtitle text in languages where none exist by combining cloud language models (such as Google Gemini and DeepSeek) with movie and show metadata from sources like TMDB and Wikipedia, so translations read more naturally than generic machine translation. The service has three surfaces:
SubContext is currently free to use. We may add, change, or remove features at any time.
Accounts are anonymous. We assign a randomly generated account id and do not require an email or any personal details. You are responsible for activity that happens under your account id. Keep it private; anyone with your id may be able to access content associated with it. You can delete your account and its associated data at any time.
When you choose to share a translation with the community, you grant SubContext a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, host, display, and distribute that translation to other users for as long as you keep it shared. You can remove translations you have shared at any time, and we will stop displaying them.
By contributing a translation, you confirm that you have the right to do so and that sharing it does not violate any law or the rights of others. Shared translations are attributed to your anonymous account id only.
You agree not to:
SubContext provides community and AI-generated subtitle text translations. We do not host, stream, or distribute films, video, or audio. You are responsible for having the right to the source material you translate.
Movie and show metadata (titles, plots, cast, artwork) belongs to its respective owners, such as TMDB, and is used under their terms. If you believe content on SubContext infringes your copyright, please see our Copyright / DMCA policy. We honor valid copyright takedowns.
SubContext is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind. AI translations may contain errors, omissions, or inaccuracies, and should not be relied on where precision matters. We do not warrant that the service will be accurate, complete, uninterrupted, or available at any given time.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, SubContext and its developer will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from your use of, or inability to use, the service. SubContext is a free, independent project, and you use it at your own risk.
We may remove content or suspend or delete accounts that violate these Terms or that harm the service or other users. You may stop using SubContext and delete your account at any time.
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "last updated" date above. Continued use of SubContext after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
