SubContext ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains how our website and browser extension handle your data.

Data We Collect

We collect minimal data:

• Anonymous account id: a randomly generated identifier, no email or personal information required.
• Subtitle content: text you submit for translation, processed to produce your translation.
• Title selections: the movies and shows you search for, used to fetch context for better translations.

Data We Do NOT Collect

• Email addresses or personal identifiers
• Payment or financial information
• Precise location data
• Advertising or cross-site tracking profiles

How We Use Data

• Translate subtitles using AI models (Google Gemini, DeepSeek).
• Fetch movie and show context from sources like TMDB and Wikipedia for accurate translations.
• Let you access and contribute community-shared translations.

Data Sharing

We do not sell or rent your data. We share it only as needed to run the service:

• AI translation providers: subtitle text is sent to AI providers (Google Gemini, DeepSeek) to perform the translation.
• Metadata providers: title search queries are sent to The Movie Database (TMDB).

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate, anonymous usage, for example which pages and features are used, so we can improve SubContext. This may set analytics cookies in your browser. We do not use this information to identify you personally, and we do not currently serve advertising. If that changes, we will update this policy and provide any consent controls required in your region.

Community Translations

If you choose to share a translation with the community, it becomes publicly available, attributed to your anonymous account id only. You can remove translations you have shared at any time.

Data Storage

• Account data is stored on our servers.
• Uploaded subtitle files are stored temporarily for processing.
• Community translations are stored until you remove them or they are taken down.

Your Rights

• Delete your account and its associated data at any time.
• Remove translations you've shared.
• Use the service without creating an account, with limited features.

Browser Extension Permissions

• activeTab: to detect what you're watching on the current tab.
• storage: to save your preferences locally.
• Host permissions: to overlay subtitles on supported streaming sites.
